Make Your Own Series: BISQUICK

I don’t know about you, but I love making my own mixes for products that are conveniently made for us and sold at big box stores. Some reasons I like to make
my own are they are generally cheaper, quantities needed can be easily adjusted based on the recipe, it can be made easily by students as part of a lab and then used in future labs and most importantly….I know exactly what is in the product!  No weird, unpronounceable ingredients! So in this Make Your Own Series, I’ll be sharing products that can easily be made from scratch, using basic, common ingredients. In this Make Your Own Series: Bisquick is the first mix I’ll be sharing.

Quesadillas

In my Exploring Foods class, I try to cover a variety of ethnic and regional foods. Quesadillas are a perfect fit for both Mexican and Southwestern cuisine! In this post, you will find a web-based assignment where students learn more about quesadillas before preparing in the lab.

43 Minute Lab Series: Puppy Chow

After noticing continuous requests for lab suggestions that are doable in 43 minute class periods, I’ve decided to do a recurring series, featuring recipes that can
be completed from beginning to end in a 43 minute time frame. In some cases, longer recipes will broken into two day labs. In addition, I will include my pre-lab review questions that pertain specifically to the recipe. This helps to ensure that students are reading the recipe. It also allows me time to show any videos that may demonstrate the product or specific techniques. So, without further ado, I present the 43 Minute Lab Series: Puppy Chow!

Project: I’m Bored!

Ever wonder how many parents over the years have heard the phrase “I’m Bored!” during the summer months from their child or children?  In this “Project: I’m Bored!”,
students research and curate activities to engage children of all age groups to not only prevent boredom, but help promote the developmental areas (PIES). This project is a great end of the year assignment or could even be used as a project for a substitute if you have to be out for day or two! Be sure to read on to learn more…

Comics in the FACS Classroom

In my younger years, the first section of the newspaper I would go for was the comics…especially the Sunday paper as they were in color! Even now, when I get the
chance to read an actual newspaper, I enjoy reading the comics (although it’s not the first section I go to). Why did I like them so much? Well, they were fun, humorous,  interesting, thought provoking and left me curious with anticipation to see what the next strip would divulge if there was an ongoing storyline. As a teacher, I have used Comics in the FACS Classroom on numerous occasions, in many ways, to excite, engage and assess my students. Read on to learn how.

Talking Points: Home Decor Trends

The definition of a trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. In the world of interior design, trends are constantly changing. Decor that was “in” is now suddenly on it’s way “out” and vice versa! In this Talking Points: Home Decor Trends, students will explore current home decor trends and then create a moodboard for a specific room that incorporates the trends in a cohesive manner.

Wordle Wednesday

Wordle is all the craze! It is a web-based word game that has people of all ages hooked and challenged on a daily basis…that is, of course, if you play! Earlier this year my students asked me to do more activities that promoted soft skills, especially those that encouraged them to be social and to be leaders. What better way to accomplish this than to do “Wordle Wednesday” in class where each week one of them is in charge of coming up with a class related word and running the show!

Fabric Marbling Project

Top 10 Lists…Video Style

Some of you may remember the Late Show with Dave Letterman! One of his regular features included his infamous top 10 lists in descending order from 10 to 1, adding his own a touch of humor and sarcasm as he shared! I have been using written top 10 lists for years and was excited when Matt Miller of Ditch That Textbook shared his version utilizing Flipgrid. Tortilla Trends: Lesson & Lab

As soon as the tortilla trends video hit my news feed, I watched it and knew I had to find a way to use it in my foods class! Am I glad I did because the “Tortilla Trends: Lesson and Lab” was a huge hit with my students!
