43 Minute Lab Series: Baked French Toast

After noticing continuous requests for lab suggestions that are doable in 43 minute class periods, I’ve decided to do a recurring series, featuring recipes that can
be completed from beginning to end in a 43 minute time frame. In some cases, longer recipes will broken into two day labs. In addition, I will include my pre-lab review questions that pertain specifically to the recipe. This helps to ensure that students are reading the recipe. It also allows me time to show any videos that may demonstrate the product or specific techniques. So, without further ado, I present the 43 Minute Lab Series: Baked French Toast!

Pre-Lab Activities

  • This lab works well if you are teaching a lesson about the Importance of Breakfast and/or if you are teaching students how to use the oven and want an easy lab for them to practice with.
  • There are a couple ways to introduce the topic of French Toast to your students. One way is to open with the prompt:  Is French toast really French? Students could do a quick Google search to locate the answer and you could have them enter their response in a Google Form if desired.
  • You could also show them the various ways that French Toast can be prepared by having them view the show “4 Levels of French Toast” and have them share which way is most similar to the method used in their family.
  • Whichever way you decide to introduce French Toast to students have students complete the Pre-Lab Questions that correspond with the Baked French Toast recipe. Go over the answers to be sure students understand what they will be doing.
