New Quick Bread Activities

I’m trying to put more of the initial investigative work on my students instead of me lecturing. As many of you know, lecturing just doesn’t cut it for very long anymore as you can see the interest level wane right before your eyes! So, instead of me going through a slide deck and having them take notes on quick bread info, I changed things up by creating some new quick bread activities! Read on to see how.

Biscuit Brigade

I never realized how many varieties of biscuits existed before doing my own research for this assignment and demonstration! In the Biscuit Brigade activity, students explore and learn about ten different types of biscuits as they complete notes and answer clue questions. 43 Minute Lab Series: Blueberry Pancakes

After noticing continuous requests for lab suggestions that are doable in 43 minute class periods, I’ve decided to do a recurring series, featuring recipes that can be completed from beginning to end in a 43 minute time frame. In some cases, longer recipes will broken into two day labs. In addition, I will include my pre-lab review questions that pertain specifically to the recipe. This helps to ensure that students are reading the recipe. It also allows me time to show any videos that may demonstrate the product or specific techniques. Quick Breads: Lesson & Labs

I have had some requests to share ideas for teaching about quick breads…so, here you go! One thing about teaching quick breads is that there are a plethora of ideas for labs so you can mix it up from one year to the next and secondly, the labs are pretty inexpensive to make so they won’t break your budget! Another thing I like about teaching quick breads is that it’s easy to include math and science concepts into your lessons and labs. Chobani Flip Muffins

Chobani and Muller have both come out with these fascinatingly delicious yogurt cups that have a side container of various toppings. These are not only great to eat but also an easy way to make unique muffins in a snap without having to buy lots of extra ingredients.
