FACS Teaching Position Openings:

Recruiting new FACS Teachers

Alternative Routes to becoming a Family Consumer Science Teacher

  • Many states have set up programs for people with bachelor degrees and/or experience in a specific subject area to become a teacher without having to start from scratch- ie. completing a bachelor’s degree in teaching. Each state calls this program by a different name. The best website I could find on the subject matter is: http://www.teach-now.org/intro.cfm To find specific information on whether or not an alternative route to teacher licensure program exists, what its called, and the requirements simply click “search” and select your state.

I am a FACS graduate with no possibility of finding a teaching position. I am a nontraditional student and middle age. We are position to move, since our house needs work. Any suggestions would be welcome.
    We live in Indiana.

email all the high schools and middle schools in the area and let them know you are certified and interested. This is what I did and I had a principal call me two months later for an interview. and I got the position!

You may want to check in the North Carolina and South Carolina area in the summer. Both are having problems with money….who isn't…..but there is a need in the area. Greenville Schools went as far as the state of Washington a couple years ago to find FCS teachers. My school had 3 when I started 5 years ago, 2 left for health reasons and we have not been able to find anyone. Pay is not great but you find other things that make the difference!

I am certified in family and consumer science. Are they still looking ?

I used to teach in SC and they recruited me from Washington! If you are in a position to move, you will find a job much easier. Also, posting resume on websites will also open doors.

Sarah, there is a position open for Middle School FACS teacher in North Lawrence School Corporation, Bedford, Indiana. Bedford is about 25 minutes south of Bloomington, IN, -Indiana University. Contact the North Lawrence Administration Office-Mr. Conner. You would teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The principal is easy to work with at that Middle School. Are your currently licensed?

I am an administrative assistant who wants a career change and I am very interested in going back to school to become a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher. Are there programs in Pittsburgh that I can obtain my teaching certificate without going back to get my undergrad degree? I already have a Bachelors degree and would hate to go back and get another one. HELP!! Or are there any schools that offer this degree in the grad level? (preferably online courses so I can still work full time)

Some states have alternative routes to education to help with the shortage areas. There is a whole website devoted to this topic: http://www.teach-now.org/intro.cfm. If you click on "search" you can search by state to find your specific state's alternative route to teacher licensure program.

Is it possible to get a job in the middle of the school year as a FACS teacher? I have heard stories of people being able to get a job if they've completed their coursework and just haven't done student teaching. I wanted to try this so I could get into the job field quicker. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know of any FCS teacher openings in the P
    ittsburgh PA area?

I recently graduated in December and I am certified in FCS Education. Interested in teaching FCS first (live in Ohio, but would be willing to move if the perfect opportunity arises), but if no jobs are available I was wondering what must be done to teach another subject. Currently, the place I mainly sub at has an English opening. Of course, I’ve had the main English courses/electives while getting my bachelors degree. Is it even possible to get hired as an English teacher with only a FCS certification? Please inform me of any openings in FCS and/or steps I must complete to get another certification in English. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Colorado posts jobs on their professional development page for career and technical education- http://www.catfacs.org. You can also contact the FACS Program Director (me) to find out more about teaching in Colorado.

South Dakota schools posts all of their teaching openings at this site. http://www.asbsd.org. You'll have to sign up for the teacher placement system, then you can see the openings. There are several for FACS teachers. I am actually an administrator from one of those schools that is looking.
