Window Treatments

This lesson teaches the basics parts of a window, window treatments and how to measure for window treatments. It also allows students to physically “make” small versions of different window treatments. These projects make great display pieces for your department’s display case or open house!

Time frame: 2 blocks (or 1 + homework)

Objectives

11.3.1 Research product information, including but not limited to floor coverings, wall coverings, textiles, window treatments, furniture, lighting fixtures, kitchen and bath fixtures and equipment, accessories, and building materials.
13.3.2 Select manufacturers, products, and materials considering care, maintenance, safety, and environmental issues.
11.3.3 Review measuring estimating, ordering, purchasing, and pricing skills.

Set

Materials

Projector & Screen
Tape Measure
Curtain Rod & Floor Length Curtain (not absolutely necessary but helps visual learners)
Scrap fabrics, trims, paper, hot glue, wire, skewers, dowels, cardboard, markers, needles & thread, scissors, etc.

Instruction

PowerPoint lecture and notes. Have students draw the treatments on the handout below.
Demonstration with classroom window on how to measure for curtains

Activities

Students will create six different window treatments in 3-D for a double hung window. In my sample I glued the piece of paper with the windows to a piece of cardboard to make it more sturdy. Have students label their window treatments.

Housing of the Future: Tin Can Houses

Time Frame: 1 Week

Objective: Students will design and create a house that is functional for the average human that is contained inside a tin can.

Set

Aleksandr Mergold and Jason Austin architects from Pennsylvania have come up with the innovative idea of making pre-fabricated housing using farm grain dryers. Show your class their website to get them inspired.

Materials

#10 tin cans
Hot glue
Card Stock
Balsa Wood
Recyclable items like toilet paper tubes, plastic bottles & containers, etc.

Instruction

Break your class into groups.
Challenge your students to create a house out of soup can or #10 can that is the most innovative and functional. You can also have the group that comes up with the most “green” house design win a special prize or more points.
There should be “diorama” made out of a can and a write up and/or pictures describing the house.
Remember that the design does not have to be just one can. Maybe two or three of different sizes attached some how.

Activities

Give students time to work on their projects in class.

Background for Teachers

Obviously, you may be thinking that cutting metal is dangerous. Good point. So either you can have your tech-ed department cut the metal cans in half for you like I did- as shown in the picture or you can use plastic soda bottles cut to size. To make a less sharp edge you can simply take a hot glue gun and put a thick layer of glue on the cut edge and let it dry. Either way, unlike the real architect’s picture of their can houses, I would not allow my students to cut the metal windows out. They can only glue paper and cardboard to the sides of their can to show where windows are.
This project requires lots of cans so have students and your colleges save their cans and bring them in. Talk to your school cafeteria or culinary program to have them save their #10 cans (the large ones as pictured above).

Extensions

Have a guest speaker from your city come and speak to the students about building codes at some point before or during this project. It is important for students to understand that even though they may have great ideas for designing housing that there are laws in place that will prevent them from doing certain things.

How does cost play into this tin can idea?
Would you be willing to live in a house like this? Why or why not?
What are some problems that may arise if these architects were to build these houses?

Evaluation

Grade on team work, design, functionality, innovation, and “greenness”
Have students do a formal presentation of their tin can homes.

April’s FACS Teacher of the Month: Lindsey Lewis

This month’s Family and Consumer Science Teacher of the Month is Lindsey Lewis FACS teacher and Electives Department Head at Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Lindsey has been teaching for 2 years and enjoys teaching FACS, because she feels that it teaches “real world” concepts. “So many of my students can use resume writing, job searching, or child development strategies in their day to day life.” She will also be using her FACS skills outside her classroom to teach life skills classes at her community’s Crisis Pregnancy Center

Lindsey uses her SmartBoard for reviewing purposes and foldables to teach vocabulary and development milestones. She also does a really neat project based on HGTV’s DesignStar White Box Challenge. “My students can create a space using all of the design elements and principles we learned. They come up with the idea and execute it!”

Below find the handout that she gives her students at the beginning of the project along with the introductory PowerPoint. She has her students tour a space in the school to “design” after showing them scenes of HGTV Design Star “White Box Challenge” so they have an understanding of what they are being asked to do.

Choosing a Place to Live

Time Frame: 2 Class Blocks

Class Size: 20 (groups of three work best)

Objective

Students will evaluate a client’s lifestyle needs and wants and use their best judgment to find the client an appropriate place to live.

Set

Present the case scenario
Put students in groups

Materials

Computer lab
Projector
Packet for each group
Brownies for the winners

Instruction

Explain the competition & instructions

Activities

Students will find a place for the client to live from the internet or real estate magazines based on the list of needs & wants provided. There are a list of websites to help students find apartments at the bottom of this page.
Have your students also check out a website that offers statistical data on the town that they are choosing. I suggest Sperling’s Best Places to Live. You just type in the zip code and information on the population, school district, unemployment rate, and cost of living come up.
Students will then create a presentation that is persuasive and professional using poster board, PowerPoint, skits, etc.

Extension

Career Connection: Ask a local real estate agent to come in and talk about how he helps his clients choose a place to live and all the variables involved.
Have students take a quiz to figure out where they would be happiest living on FindYourSpot.com the only thing bad about this site is it asks you for your name and address, etc. but they will only send you junk mail if you check the boxes.

Evaluation

Day 2: have students present their living arrangements. The group that was able to meet the most needs/wants from the list win. If there is a tie it is the teacher’s preference.
