<p><strong>Objectives</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>10.1 Analyze career paths  within the hospitality, tourism and recreation industries.</li>
<li>10.1.4 Analyze the impact of  hospitality              occupations on local, state,  national, and global economies.</li>
<li>10.5.4 Assemble information  needed for domestic and international travel.</li>
<li>10.5.5 Produce travel documents  and itineraries, utilizing current technology.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Set</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Tourism &amp; Travel Survey has students get up and talk to each other questions about their travels.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Materials</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Computer Lab</li>
<li>Projector</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Instruction</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>If possible contact your local AAA office and have a travel agent come in and talk to your class about travel and about travel related careers.</li>
<li>Have a class discussion on travel and the travel industry. The PowerPoint below will help guide that discussion. Have students take notes on the discussion not just on the slides.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Activities</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>There are several activities you can do depending on time. There are two projects (see attachments) that have students plan a vacation for a specific amount of money. There is also a mini assignment that has students create a timeline of how the travel/tourism industry changed over time in America. Finally, there is also an assignment (1 page paper) about the future of tourism/travel that makes students think about what new things there may be and what restrictions may be enforced.</li>

<p><strong>Background for Teachers</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>The project is a project where difficulty matters. When you look through the rubric you will see a lot of pieces that are optional and that warrant extra credit. I tell my students that the more complex the event you plan the more points you can earn but you more points you can lose too because there are more parts that are graded. In contrast picking an easy event to plan like a Superbowl party for five will not allow students to take advantage of the extra credit options and therefore all the pieces they turn in have to be nearly perfect to receive a good grade. So, it is possible to plan a large event like a wedding have more mistakes but receive more points than someone that planned a backyard tea party and did the bare minimum.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Instruction</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Go over the instruction packet and answer any questions.</li>
<li>Brainstorm as a class event ideas. Discuss the positives and negatives of planning certain events. For example planning a wedding for 300 people is much more complex than planning a slumber party for 10 girls at your house.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Activities </strong></p>
<ul>
<li>My students work on their projects at least once or twice a week in class (3 months). It is possible to just assign the project but I find that most of the learning happens when I help them individually<strong>. </strong>Asking questions like, &#8220;did you think about this? How is this fitting with the theme? <strong>&#8221; </strong>often aid in learning. <strong><br />
</strong></li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Extensions</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>If at all possible, try to either take your students to meet a real event planner or have one come in and speak to your students. The job sounds fun and glamorous but that is not always the case. This is also one of those businesses that often can only be successful if networking is a priority. These are the types of things to ask an event planner to talk to your students about.</li>
</ul>

<h3>Objective</h3>
<ul>
<li>The student will set a basic, informal, and formal place setting correctly.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Set</h3>
<ul>
<li>Have the students draw the correct way to set the table on a scrap piece of paper. Give the person who gets it completely correct a prize.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Instruction</h3>
<ul>
<li>Demonstrate how to correctly set a basic, informal, and formal place setting. While you are doing this describe what kind of meal would be served for each kind of table setting.</li>
<li>Have the students take notes- drawing each table setting that you are demonstrating</li>
<li>After you have completed, have the students put away their notes and set each kind of place setting as you tell them. When all students finish have the class correct any mistakes.</li>
<li>Next demonstrate how to set up a buffet line and have the class practice.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Materials</h3>
<ul>
<li>Enough      plates, glasses, forks, knives, spoons, soup spoons, dessert forks, butter      knives, saucers, tea cups, fabric napkins, bread plates, for each student      in your class.</li>
